OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Fast-food workers throughout Oakland are walking off the job and joining in on a worldwide campaign Thursday to ask for higher pay and the right to form a union.
According to a spokesman for the group East Bay Organizing Committee, more than 100 people, including workers, supporters and faith leaders, began the protest at 6 a.m. at a McDonald’s located at 2520 E. 12th St.
Several stops are planned throughout the day, including a protest at 11 a.m. the McDonald’s located at 1330 Jackson St. in Oakland. Hundreds of protesters are expected at that location.
Workers are calling for a pay raise to $15 per hour and the right to form a union without retaliation, according to the group’s spokesman.
Other workers striking in Oakland today include those at Burger King, Wendy’s, KFC, Jack in the Box, Carl’s Jr., Taco Bell, and Domino’s Pizza restaurants.
The wave of strikes and protests is taking place in 150 cities across the U.S. and in 33 countries, according to the group.
